IMPORTANT NOTE:    Big change for 2020!

GDMTA is not sanctioning any ladder matches for now.

The GDMTA will still serve as an online bulletin board for those who might want to play during this time.  If you would still like the option to play or to be contacted to play by other members, feel free to  sign up at any time during the season using the standard application process.  Your name will be added to the Ladders of your choosing.  There will be NO FEE for the 2020 Season.

GDMTA will NOT be rewarding wins or even encouraging playing matches.  There will be no penalties for not playing, and if you choose to sign up, you are NOT required to play if someone contacts you.  No matches will be recorded for the First Session, and playoffs will not be scheduled.

You are welcome to play at your own discretion and at your own risk.  However, the GDMTA will NOT be held responsible for any matches played.  If state or national guidelines develop that suggest tennis is inherently unsafe, or we have a stay-at-home order, then we reserve the right to shut down the bulletin board.

The GDMTA Board will reevaluate a possible Second Session in late June, dependent upon CDC guidelines and government restrictions at that time.

If you do choose to play, below are some safety tips that the Board would highly encourage you to follow:

  1. Cancel a match and do NOT play if you feel sick, have a fever, or show symptoms of respiratory illness.
  2. Do NOT touch your face during the match and be sure to wash your hands with soap for a full 20 seconds after playing.
  3. Ensure ahead of time that the court you choose to play at is still open. Some have been shut down due to the pandemic.
  4. Bring hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to sterilize surfaces that you may touch that others may have also touched, especially metal surfaces.  If you don’t have access to hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer can be made with aloe vera and rubbing alcohol and homemade wipes can be made with bleach and water on a washcloth in a ziplock bag.
  5. Maintain a 6 foot distance from other players at all times.
  6. Do NOT shake hands, bump elbows, or even touch rackets.
  7. If you take a break, sit on opposite sides of the court.
  8. Opponents should remain playing on the same side of the court for the entire match and not switch sides.
  9. Each player should have their own can of balls marked for their serve only.  No one else on the court should pick up the server’s balls, just move them around with their racket.  Only put two balls each in play at first, keeping one stored away in case someone forgets and handles another player’s ball. If someone is playing on the court next to you, ask them to only touch your stray ball with their racket, and you’ll do the same.
  10. Consider wearing a glove on your non-dominant hand, as a reminder to not touch your face or the other players’ balls.

The Greater Des Moines Tennis Association's (GDMTA) major activity is to organize summer tennis ladders with multiple divisions to accommodate players of all skill levels.  Juniors are welcome to join; we do not have specific junior divisions but they will be competitive at some level.  Our normal registration fee entitles members to participate in as many ladders as they choose (e.g., open and/or age divisions, doubles, mixed doubles) and to participate in both sessions, which together run from mid-April through August with playoffs extending into September.

Newcomers should note that you can join at any time.  People who enroll now will be enrolled in the 2019 season.  Each division/ladder is available on this site, with contact information for setting up matches. Matches are initiated by a player challenging another player in their division.  The most advanced players/teams should sign up for Division 1 and those who are starting out should consider Division 3 or 4.  Complete rules are also available on this site and you should familiarize yourself with them...
