The GDMTA is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation.  All donations are tax deductible, but not ladder fees.  It was formed in the early 1940's for the purpose of promoting recreational tennis.  We are a USTA member organization, but you do not have to belong to the USTA to join us.  We are a source for tennis information and we help represent your concerns at the state level for any USTA activity, such as leagues and tournaments.

Our major activity is to organize a summer tennis ladder with multiple divisions to accomodate players of all skill levels.  Juniors are welcome to join, but we do no have specific junior divisions at this time.  (DSM Parks & Rec has a program for recreational junior players-call John Terpkosh at 237-1405)  To get involved in our ladders, players sign up for their choice or choices of ladders all for just the one fee.

Our season starts at the end of April, but you can join at any time.  We take all applicants in a division, randomize them with the computer for the initial listing of the season, then send out the lists and a copy of the current rules.  You move up by defeating players listed above you.  You schedule your own matches at any court you and your opponent agree to.  You are mailed an updated listing approxiamtely every two weeks.  The challenge limit is open.
To choose the division you wish to play in, you rank yourself.  If you have questions regarding this, call a board member.

There are two ladder sessions with different qualifuing requirements for the playoffs.  However, anyone may join at any time.  The one fee covers both sessions and as many divisions as you are eligible for and choose to play in.  Playing on the ladder gives you a list of people who want to play tennis, and you can have the fun of competitive as well as recreational tennis.  You play as often as you want.

The main focus of the GDMTA Board is to promote the great game of tennis by increasing our Associations membership.  We need everyone's help in recruiting new members to take advantage of all the good things we have to offer:

  • Free tennis at our fall and winter socials at Aspen Athletic Clubs and Drake University.
  • After school programs in conjunction with the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department.
  • Sponsorship of various tournaments throughout Polk County.
  • Trophies and awards for first and second place finishers in each division.
  • Annual meeting at Aspen Athletic Club plus much, much, more…

  • If you know of anyone who has not been involved in our association within the past 2 years and would like to join our group, please call one of the following individuals who will ensure they receive an application.
      ••Alan Reed 278-4190
      ••Clyde Miller 221-2967
